NHRA Championship Points (old style) Memphis (1 Viewer)

AFL and NFL... shows how long it's been since I watched football... guess they reorganized sometime in the last twenty years or so... believe it was eastern, central, and western divisions... both leagues....

pssst Karl, the NFL and AFL merged 37 years ago. The divisions realigned in '02. I know you find this fascinating. LOL! :)

I know what you mean. I'm getting to that age where "just a couple years ago" is actually seven or eight. I think the Angels won the Series in '02. You know, a couple of years ago! :D LOL! Have a good one.

I don't get the pressure thoughts. How many dnq's have we seen this year where the drivers said it doesn't hurt as bad as it used to because of the chase. They don't have to qualify or even show up at every race to have a shot at the title now. When you know you only have to aim for the top 8 because then the powers that be are going to give you points in order to catch up, to me thats less preassure. You only have to be medicore now.

Out spent? So Kalitta and Bernstein don't have any money and thats why Tony has been winning those championship?

In order to make the money fair, should we only allow money teams to show up at so many races that way the lower budget guys have more time to catch them? Should they get a .1 head start, maybe .2? Yes money is part of the equation there is no doubting that but its not everything.
You're right PJ, the pressure was less on the teams for the first part of the season, but you have to know it's killing them now. Greg Anderson is staying up nights trying to figure out what to do about "Lucky". All I was trying to say is that the pressure of making the final 4 is weighing on the teams, and it's playing an equalizer to the $$$ teams.

so lets see we replaced a 23 race season of pressure for a 6 race season??? Even when the championships were locked up early it still was more then 6 races.

The races are awesome to watch, always have been. But the Championships were BORING, this 6 race stint is definitely not boring.

Everyone says blah, blah, blah, NHRA just copied NASCAR. NASCAR went to a playoff system because their sport was getting tuned out in September when the football season started. Alot of times their Championship was sewed up by September also, so it only left the hardcore race fans watching, just because they enjoyed watching races. Now, Sports Fans follow it through the Chase because it gives them a playoff to follow. That is the same reason NHRA went to the Countdown, and like it or not, it will help grow the sport.

CHECK AGAIN. After the first year of the nascar chase, which did see an increase in tv ratings, it has gone down each year since. Last season(and perhaps the year before too) was lower then it was before the chase. That is why nascar once again changed their system this year. If I heard correctly, the person leading their points up until the playoffs wasn't actually leading the points when the playoffs started???

I have no problem copying another sport, lets just copy something that will work for the long haul. A short flash in the pan, which is all the countdown can ever really hope to be, will not help grow the sport. As I've said many times you do not mortgage the intergrity of the sport and hope new fans will discover it. You do a better job promoting what you have.

So true, NHRA has always done a horrible job of promoting what they have. I have never understood what their hang up is with that. The sport is an amazing spectator sport, they have an awesome product, what's so hard about bringing it into the main stream?

On the Countdown, I don't see it as a flash in the pan. Most people who are against it just are not open to change. Everyone is saying it's manufactured drama because it does not take into account all of the races. Once again I have to ask, why is it acceptable that the New England Patriots are accepted as the Champions when the Indy Colts had a much better win/loss record over the season? More than likely it's because that's the way the NFL playoffs have worked forever, it's what they are used to seeing.

Now if you want to talk about a farse, crowning the college Football Champions, that's way out there.............................

Actually I'm not opposed to change. I just don't think you make changes for the sake of change. There are a whole list of things that I would change :)

How many teams are there in the nfl? 32
How many games do teams play? 16
Of those 16 games each team plays 3 teams twice.
This means you play 13 out of 32 teams. A playoff is needed to actually see who is the best. That I can live with. Also to be honest I don't expect that the best team ever wins the championship in other sports. A few years ago George Washington made it to the final Four. Does anyone really believe that they were one of the 4 best teams in the country that season? Nope they got hot/lucky at the right time.

Plus where in the nfl are non playoff teams allowed to interfere with those in the playoffs.

One of the beauties about Drag Racing is that every race is a playoff, this is why a countdown is so bad. Every race is crowned with a race champ. Win or go home. There are no time outs, no half time, no trades, no home field or bad ref calls. It's all or nothing put up or shut up....at least that how it was. Now you don't have to win, diving is the evil necessity. Teams aim for
8th instead of shooting for #1. In the past we were one of the few sports where the entire season mattered and our champs truely were the best over a season. Now you just have to be good for a few races. Not to pick on Herbert. but just as an example, he wins one race, enteres the "playoffs with a losing record 12 wins -13 losses, after some dnq's and a 3-2 record so far all of a sudden he's a championship contender????

Either Bobby or Larry said this awhile back. The countdown is socialism at its worst. Penalize the overachiever, reward the mediocre and call it competition.

beyond the sights, sounds and sensations I love about the races. I also love that it is, or at least was, the truest form of compitition. Either for the race or the season I know the best racer was crowned....thats not the case anymore.

well said PJ

But I'm one of those "IF It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix IT"

What will it take for JQ Public to discover Drag Racing? Live TV? Nope...

One PRO Class... We have too many Winners at each Race... After the Kapt. K and Allen thing at Dallas, you'd be surprised at the the number of People saying they saw 2 Funny Cars run into each other the following Monday...

Who Won LeMans? we talking P1, P2, GT1. GT2?....

At Least F1 is F1

Nextel Cup is Cup cars....

Wake up... NHRA... It's Time to Have One Pro Class only

The real reason that NASCAR changed their rules from 10-12 cars in the chase is that Gordon and JR missed the chase last year. They are Nascar's two biggest draws. I'm suprised they didn't change the rules again 2 weeks ago to get JR in the chase.
