Complus has a nice article about Butch Leal, who has been retired a long time and is now a grandfather. Butch mentions that he quit because his eyesight was getting worse and he didn't want to give up anything to the younger guys. He also said that seeing Garlits racing in Stock Eliminator has him pondering how that might be fun and doable. Which got me thinking, how cool would it be to have a bunch of older, retired pros, racing in the new muscle cars, the Challengers, Camaros, & Mustangs? Jeggie is building a new Challenger, he could put Jeg Sr. in it, and I'll bet there are a bunch of retired pros who would have a riot competing in a class like that. I know, it's "pipe-dreamish", but hey, it's cold here and I'm a little bored!

Get McEwen and Prudhomme back out there in Hot Wheels Mopars............

While we're at it, Shoe in one painted with Stardust colors, and Paul Candies in a Motorcraft Mustang............:D

It would be cool to have this like the Hemi Car clash in Indy.

Gartlis isn't the only one out there... Larry Griffith is also back in a 09 A/Stock Challenger that he plans to start competing with next year. It's painted exactly like his '68 Dart was....
Here's a link to the finished photos
Larry Griffith's 2009 Super Stock Challenger - Progress Photos 5-21-09 pictures from racing photos on webshots

and where I have all the other photos from picking the car up through completion. Larry's car was the second one built after Don's.

That's a pretty good idea and could help drive some wider exposure of the sport at a time when we really need it.

We would need a sponsor with "geezer" targeted products (ie Just for Men hair dye, or prostate meds, or viagra, or mail order brides, or ...) to sponsor the series and we would need someone at NHRA to get behind the idea and give a shot.

NHRA guys, if you are tuned in you should think about this one, its a pretty good idea.

would give similar age stock eliminator veterans great targets, especially
if running class.

I think it could actually be a very cool marketing deal for the NHRA. I'm not a Stock Eliminator expert, so I don't know what the best way to structure it would be, all Challengers, or Challengers vs. Mustangs, or whatever, but I would pay to see Garlits racing his new Challenger against Snake in one of those new Mustangs!

I LOVE it but sheeeesh.... Save some sponsors for the other drivers!!! :p

Didnt nascar do something like this earlier this year with like late model cars at bristol? I know there was a short live GP legends series that had alot of classic f1 drivers in it, Im not sure you'd need a big time sponsor for it, would really put @sses in the seats as they say...

Gee, and just think of the exposure it would give to the lowly Stock Eliminator category. Gotta believe every stock elim driver would welcome them in and look forward to the racing experience. I would love it.

Unk

GREAT IDEA, we are lucky to have a lot of seniors that would be great to see ON the track again. Dick LaHaie - Connie Kalitta - Tommy Ivo - Eddie Hill - Kenny Bernstein - ect. You could fill a 16 car field no problem. Tracks from coast to coast would book them in a heart beat.

We all laugh a little at the potential sponsors, but in reality, with aging baby boomers being such a large demographic, the pool of potential sponsors is pretty big.
