I can't see how any of these guys break even or make money on 1st round money! Unless its a race in their hometown, with an all volunteer crew!

Home town race, or close to it. Get a sponsor to help with hotels, and if you have ever "volunteered" on some of these low budget teams, they will give you a new definition of "low budget!" With some, from my experience, you would be lucky to even get food taken care of...they act like they are doing you the favor by letting you work on their car. Needless to say, I don't help this individual any more...

Back in the day I crewed on a touring funnycar from the east coast, and I assure you the 'half a hamburger tour' didn't get that name by chance.
