Herbert upbeat despite first round loss

LAS VEGAS, NV, post-race: Doug Herbert may have lost in the first round of the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals on Sunday, but the driver of the Snap-on Tools dragster was still pleased with his team's effort during the weekend. Herbert enjoyed a strong qualifying performance with three solid runs as the Snap-on Tools team continues preparing for the 2007 NHRA season.

Sunday's eliminations featured the fourth consecutive day of spectacular weather at the Las Vegas Nationals. Herbert came into the day qualified in the top half of the field in the No. 8 position on the strength of his 4.564 at 324.28 mph. "Dougzilla" squared off against the No. 9 qualifier, David Grubnic, and they were the first pair to battle it out on Sunday.

After a stirring rendition of the National Anthem, the Snap-on Tools dragster came to life in front of the huge crowd. Herbert preformed his pre-race burnout and staged his car his car in the left lane. He got the jump on Grubnic at the flash of green with an excellent .061 reaction time, but unfortunately the Snap-on Tools dragster shook the tires early and Herbert was forced to lift off the throttle. Grubnic drove by him to take the victory with a 4.609 at 295.66 mph to Herbert's 6.731 at 123.66 mph.

"We had a decent weekend," offered Herbert following the first round. "I hate that we had problems getting down the track during the first round. But overall it was one of our best weekends racing in a long time. We'll figure out what we did wrong here and I'm confident we can go to Pomona and do much better."
