Herbert surprised by first round loss after stellar qualifying effort

POMONA, CA, post-race: Doug Herbert only smoked the tires once in the Snap-on Tools dragster all weekend. Unfortunately, it happened during the first round of eliminations on Sunday at the Auto Club of Southern California NHRA Finals.

Herbert and the Snap-on Tools team entered Sunday's eliminations in the No. 10 position after making four outstanding runs during the three days of qualifying. Herbert made consistent runs of 4.61, 4.53, 4.60 and 4.54 as new crew chief Doug Kuch and veteran tuning consultant Jim Brissette continued to refine their tune up for next season. Herbert was making his 254 career NHRA Top Fuel start on Sunday.

The weather for the final day of the 2006 POWERade Drag Racing Series season was outstanding and the grandstands were full of California drag racing faithful. Herbert was up against Rod Fuller in round one of eliminations and they were the second pair of cars to go down the quarter-mile. Both cars left together at the flash of the green light but the Snap-on Tools car smoked the tires right off the starting line and Herbert desperately tried to pedal the throttle to regain traction. By then Fuller had streaked by the Snap-on car to take the win with 4.544 at 327.35 mph. Herbert recorded a 10.318 at 97.42 mph.

"After our consistent performance during qualifying we didn't expect to be going out in the first round," said Herbert. "Hopefully we've learned something over the last few races. We're looking forward to testing and preparing for next season. All we can do now is look towards the winter and next year."
