Herbert goes out in the first round

DENVER, CO, post-race: Snap-on Tools Top Fuel driver Doug Herbert was eliminated in the first round on Sunday at the 27th annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway in Denver. Herbert made five full runs during the weekend but was unable to capitalize on his consistency on race day.

Sunday was another hot day on Thunder Mountain with temperatures soaring into the mid-90 degree range as racing began at high noon. Herbert entered eliminations from the No. 11 qualifying position and squared off against Larry Dixon in the first round. Herbert left the starting line first with a .070 to .096 reaction time but the Snap-on Tools dragster dropped a cylinder and Dixon drove by him for the win. Herbert recorded a 5.007 at 276.75 mph to Dixon's 4.835 at 307.65 mph.

"The Snap-on Tools car made it down the track on every run," said Herbert, "we just didn't qualify well enough and didn't make it down the track good enough in round one. I had a good reaction time and our run, even though it wasn't that great, would have won most of the other races. It was just bad luck of the draw. I'm a believer that you've got to make your own luck, so Wayne and the crew will work very hard to make our own good luck next weekend in Seattle."
