JOLIET, Ill. – Shawn Gann knew facing Steve Johnson in the first round of the NHRA Full Throttle Series Pro Stock Motorcycle eliminations at the United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway was going to be challenge. What he didn’t know was that Johnson was going to have some help courtesy of an engine gremlin on Gann’s XTreme Rebellion/RumBum Buell.
Gann, the no. 11 qualifier for Sunday’s eliminations, beat Johnson off the line with a reaction time of .026 to Johnson’s .035 and was leading at the 800-ft. mark. At that point, Johnson chased him down and beat the 2004 winner of this event by approximately seven feet.
“We broke a crank,” a dejected Gann said after the run. “That was my fastest motor, and when you break a crank in your fastest motor, that means it’s not your fastest motor anymore.
“It was great to beat Steve off the line. He’s always great off of the tree and we beat him there. Just wish we could have kept it that way all the way down the track.”
Even with the first-round exit, there were a lot of positives to be had for the XTreme Rebellion/RumBum Buell team. Gann was able to run fast consistently when his fellow PSM racers saw their speeds slow dramatically over the two days of qualifying, earning second-quick ET on Friday.
“It was still a positive weekend, because I’m out here at the track and we did have some good runs,” said Gann, whose 2009 round win-loss record falls to 4-5 after Sunday’s eliminations. “Today was just a rough day; our computer broke so we didn’t get any data from that run, which really sucks. We’ll just load up and go to the next one and work hard.”
The NHRA Full Throttle Series Pro Stock Motorcycles have a quick turnaround, racing again next weekend in Englishtown, N.J., at the United Association NHRA SuperNationals. Gann is the 2003 Pro Stock Motorcycle winner there and is looking forward to a fresh start.
"In Englishtown we'll have a whole new everything, so I hope it works out for us there."
