Heading into the opening day of qualifying at the Mopar Mile-High Nationals in Denver, Colo. Summit Racing driver Greg Anderson knew that he and the rest of the Pro Stock contingent would be racing in conditions unlike any other on the NHRA’s Full Throttle circuit. With their engines robbed of almost 400 horsepower by the wafer-thin air at Bandimere Speedway, hitting the proper tune-up would be critical.
Although the defending Pro Stock champion made two representative runs on Friday, with his best effort of 7.038-seconds and a top speed of 196.27 mph slotting him in the seventh position, he was far from pleased, and enters Saturday’s final two attempts determined to better his initial performance.
“We certainly have our work cut out for us tomorrow,” said Anderson. “I’m actually a little disappointed by how we ran off the trailer – we should have been better than that. I guess we need to go back and pay a little better attention to our notes. Fortunately, we were directionally correct in the second session and made some gains, but still have some ground to make up.
“Looking at the forecast, tonight’s session was probably the best one of the four, so we may be stuck in our current qualifying position, but that’s not what really matters. What’s important is that we get our performance closer to the top of the pack. Therefore, we’ll use tomorrow as a tuning day for Sunday, making some major changes to our Summit Racing Pontiacs trying to make it better. It’s time to roll up our sleeves.”
