Wilkerson ready to make up some lost ground

DALLAS, Prerace: With needing only 14 points to regain the NHRA POWERade Championship point lead, Springfield, Ill. Funny Car favorite Tim Wilkerson plans to cover some ground this weekend at the O’Reilly Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex, and get his Levi, Ray & Shoup Chevrolet Impala SS back as the leader of the pack.

Wilkerson had been building up his points as he held on to the lead for 12 races. Then last week beginning with the Countdown to 1, Wilk’s point lead was reduced to 30 points. And with going out in the first-round at the Carolina Nationals, his 30 point advantage didn’t hold up and Wilkerson slid to the No. 5 spot. But it’s a tight battle and he is only 13 points out of first place.

“I think the weather will be pretty close to what it was last week in Charlotte,” said Wilkerson. “It’s usually pretty hot and nasty. So we’re going to have to find our power again. We’re just going to have to lean on it harder. All of our tune-up numbers didn’t jive out last week, so we’re going to try and fix that for this race. We usually fair pretty well in Dallas, so I think we can make up the ground we lost. We’re going to work hard at it because we didn’t give up, that’s for sure.

“The devastation the good people in the gulf of Texas suffered is inconceivable and our hearts and prayers go out to them. So, hopefully we can put on a good show this weekend and with a little luck we’ll have some fun and get to dedicate our win to them on Sunday.”
