Striker Monaro top qualifies at Summernationals

17th Feb 2007 - John Zappia thrilled his Sydney fans here at Western Sydney International Raceway by running the Striker Monaro quick enough to top qualify in the toughest Top Doorslammer field ever to assemble in Australia.

"On the first run, the car went right straight for the centreline, so I yanked the wheel to correct and kept the boot in. The engine hit the limiter in second because I forgot to hit third - but the car still went 6.130et!" said an elated Zap in the pits. "Check the incrementals on that run - it could have been a five".

"Second pass went dead straight and 6.040et to get us to number one spot. We turned the car around and on the third qualifyer the diff yolk let go after tyre shake in first gear dropping the tailshaft. Bits went everywhere, but we were lucky really with no real damage. The engine only went to a little over 10,000rpm when it broke, and it could have been nasty if it had a massive over rev."

"Thanks to Striker we now have plenty of spares, so we will stick the spare diff in and prepare for eliminations tomorrow".
