There was a lot of tire shake going on during the first session as 3 of the WCOPMA “top runners” were not currently qualified after Friday night.

When Saturday morning rolled around everyone was ready for the second qualifying session. In the end, Randy Kay’s 6.292 from Friday night was good enough to hold on to the top spot while Rod Burbage bumped up into the number 2 spot with a 6.396 @ 218.04 and Doug Balance claimed the number 3 spot with a soft 6.601 @ 209.53. The final qualifying order was as follows:

Final Qualifying Order:

1) Kay* 6.292 @ 229.05
2) Burbage* 6.396 @ 218.04
3) Ballance 6.601 @ 209.53
4) Leonard* 6.640 @ 207.73
5) Holsey* 6.718 @ 205.84
6) Stefan* 6.986 @ 199.93

The first round saw Kay getting the win over Myers, Leonard defeating Holsey, Burbage over Diedrich (who was placed into the field for Finley who broke during the first qualifying session) and Balance took the win light over Stefan. In the semi-final round Kay beat Leonard and Burbage got the win over the tire shaking 53 Vette of Doug Balance. This placed Randy Kay against Rod Burbage in the final round. The two of them are great friends on and off the track and Lonnie Houde just happens to tune both of these cars. With Kay getting lane choice he had the early advantage. They pulled up and did side-by-side burnouts and the fans that stuck around went wild. Once the tree dropped it looked like a good race until Burbage got loose and started shaking the tires around 400 feet out and had to peddle it while Randy Kay went on to run another consistent 6.31 to take the win.

Congrats to Randy, Cheryl and their crew consisted of Jason Bunker, Cory Dow and Frank Veitschegger. Also, Lonnie Houde did a great job all weekend getting Randy’s car running between 6.29-6.34 every pass, all weekend.

The next stop for Randy Kay and the WCOPMA is in Medford, Oregon for a one-day race Saturday, August 2nd. For more information visit: West Coast Outlaw Pro Modified Association -:- Index or Champion Raceway Home.
