Johnson Jr. races to the No. 3 position

Tommy Johnson Jr. raced his Don “the Snake” Prudhomme-owned special edition Skoal Racing Chevy Funny Car to the No. 3 qualifying spot Saturday at Bandimere Speedway after clocking a 4.907-second elapsed time on Friday evening.

Facing the toughest conditions this season due to the near 6,000-foot elevation at Bandimere Speedway and temperatures that reached into the triple digits, Johnson’s best qualifying attempt came Friday evening under the lights at Bandimere Speedway when he used a tune-up from veteran crew chief Mike Green to record a run of 4.907 seconds at 303.37 mph. On Saturday, Johnson’s silver-and-blue special edition Skoal Racing flopper lost traction on both qualifying attempts. This marks the second straight race where Johnson has qualified third. He now sits fifth in the Skoal Showdown standings.

“After a really good run on Friday night, we had some fuel system issues on Saturday,” Johnson said. “You have to change things so drastically on these race cars to run here at Denver, so it makes it a challenge to race here. I’m glad it happened today. Now, we can get the problems fixed and have a good race car for Sunday.”

The seven-time NHRA winner will face off against No. 14 qualifier Mike Ashley in the first round of Funny Car eliminations which begin at Noon (MT) at the scenic Denver-area track. Johnson and the flopper upstart and former Pro Mod standout have yet to meet during eliminations.
