Gustov...here we go again (1 Viewer)

In my life in SE Texas there is one phrase I have grown to hate.....

Expect the best and prepare for the worst!

Here we go folks....Oh, let's enjoy our holiday weekend and save Monday for preparation!

Wait until Monday here and it could be too late.

Who knows yet?! I could be staggering around Sunday night after a weekend at the lake trying to 'batten down the hatches'! ;)

We're ready to go here, just have to pull out the wood to cover up. We've got a generator and 75 gallons of gas (which jumped 20 cents a gallon at most stores today). Lines were bad at several gas stations. My wife couldn't buy batteries at Wal-Mart (sold out). It looks like people aren't waiting for the last second like many did with Katrina.

Barry, if it tracks the way they are predicrting now (and it is still early) it will make landfall between Nawlin's and Lake Charles aroungd 4am Tuesday.

The scope of winds from our weather service shows Mississippi in the wind field of 39 - 58 mph. Like I said its still early so don't stop taking precautions. We filled everything up and got 20 extra gallons of gas for the generator. And to think, we dropped the idea of putting in a 20Kw natural gas generator because we are going to put our house on the market.

Don't let your guard down.

I live right outside New Orleans(about 8 miles west), of course we have been watching this storm very closely. I don't look forward to getting on I-10 to head west, but I will do what I need to do to protect my family. I already put my brother in San Antonio on alert and have a spot to park the trailer near San Antonio Raceway. This weekend we were gonna be racing at the IHRA Sportsnational in Baton Rouge....now......who knows where we will be.:(......Hoping for the best!!!

The tracks changed a bit after that left hand turn it took last night. It's liable to change several more times before the weekend is over. Either way, we are ready here. Gas jumped 20 more cents here over night. Stations everywhere are running out of Regular, motels in the Jackson area are booked.

Hey Gary, did they cancel that race?

Not yet? But if the storm is still tracking tomorrow like it is today. I don't see how they won't cancel it. I know we won't be going if its still tracking for anywhere near here. I figure we will need to be on the road by the latest Sunday.

They moved the LSU game to 10am instead of tomorrow night. The gas prices here actually dropped 5-7 cents a gallon after an official got on the news last and talked about price gauging. Amazing how that works.

Yep I'm in Houston and the wheels that supply a whole lot of our lifeblood are going into winding down and hibernation.
Movements have all but halted and with prices expected to climb no one is selling inventory.

Someone is going to take a hit even if it's just the oil infrastructure in the gulf.
Anyone care to venture how much of that profit margin evaporates when the losses due to damage and production losses are added up.
We need to increase production because living on the edge of having enough supply artificially drives up prices.

We need to spread production and refining around so the temporary loss of one area doesn't cripple our production.

We should never have less than three months on hand supply available to cushion shocks such as storms so the market would not act in such a kneejerk manor.

Ah we could wish couldn't we , or maybe hope for sanity to somehow enter our leaders heads in the form of an energy plan that serves the needs of the producers and the people.

Refineries operate at about 4 percent profit and as hard and costly as it is to permit and build a new one it just isn't cost effective.
We are a market economy , if there's money to be made it will happen , no profit forget it not worth the effort the last 40 years.
There is a environmental group or a law or a permitting process holding up virtually every form of energy production or transfer we presently have.
We are hamstringing ourselves and cutting our own throats on a bet something will magically appear to take the place of oil [ hopefully ] before we kill off our economy and by extension ourselves.
Yep its going to be a bad storm and it will be felt much further than it has to be [ THANKS WASHINGTON ].

It's my contention that energy in all it's forms is not only the lifeblood that makes it all work but is critical to our national sovereignty.
Europe is facing being held hostage to Russian energy sales .
Reagan fixed the Soviets holding Europe hostage over Nuclear Warheads by signing treaties and placing our missiles over there but the last time I looked we are almost in the same boat as Europe since we are importing 67 percent of our oil.
Of course I could be wrong ! I hope !

larry,
you're rite on money with your comments.
as hard as it mite be to believe, you are rite, refineries operate
with very slim margins, in fact, there is a refinery up north here that
has operated in the red for at least the last year......information
shared by a management employee.

please be safe to all of you living near gulf coast.

Getting a gallon of oil [ $2.76 @ $ 116 a bbl.] is not quite as easy as opening a tap and filtering 8 16 oz [ @ $ 1.49 = $11.92 a gal.] bottled water.
Last time I was at Ennis the water was $ 3.00 a bottle and it was a hundred degrees.
No wonder family's can't afford to come out to the tracks.

Well they do have to filter the water but last I checked they didn't have to spend a million dollars plus to open a tap like it costs to drill a well [ on land ].
And that just gets it out of the ground not to the refinery or the gas station.
Looks like Gustov is going to impact the heart of our production area so United States be sure to tell your elected leaders how happy to pay out of the arse for shortsightedness you are.
Here are a few you can start with.

Well, it looks like the feeder bands are here to stay tonight. Hopefully, I won't be offline as long as last time (Katrina). May God be with all in Gustav's path.
