Battling the most adverse conditions this season, two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon drove his Miller Lite dragster to the No. 6 qualifying position Saturday at Bandimere Speedway after carding a qualifying-best elapsed time of 4.654 seconds.
Dixon drove his Miller Lite/Lucas Oil-backed rail to three solid attempts during qualifying for the 27th annual Mile-High Nationals. His best effort came on Friday’s second attempt when he powered to a performance of 4.654 seconds at 314.90 mph. On his other two full passes, Dixon raced to identical 4.86-second runs. Dixon’s 4.654 pass was the second quickest run he has ever recorded at the scenic Denver-area track. He qualified third at the Mile-High Nationals last year.
“We made three nice runs, but on two of them, we went down the track on seven cylinders,” Dixon said. “Donnie (Bender), Todd (Smith) and the guys will work hard to try and get the car to run on eight cylinders, which makes things tricky because then it will have more power and want to spin the tires.
“I take for granted that they’ll give me a good race car that’s capable of winning. If something goes wrong, then I’ll do what I can to try and help the team win the race.”
Dixon, a two-time winner of the Denver NHRA race, will match-up against No. 11 qualifier Doug Herbert in the first round of Top Fuel eliminations, which kick-off at Noon (MT) on Sunday afternoon. Dixon is 23-7 in his career versus the North Carolina-based racer.
