Bradford 10th on Friday

With the help of clutchman Jim Schneider, Tom Bradford has got his 60 foots back. Missing for most of the 2007 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle tour has been the starting line performance that helped launch Bradford into the exclusive Mickey Thompson 6 Second Club and last year's Ringers Gloves Pro Bike Battle. But Bradford laid down a 1.08 that put The Sportsman Channel Buell a solid tenth in the field in Friday's first round of qualifying for the Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Illinois.

qualifying round 1

60ft-1.087, 330ft-2.923, 660ft-4.488 at 155.87mph, 1000ft-5.862

"Out of the box, that was stellar," said Bradford. "Jim's been working hard on the clutch, and we've been working hard on our 60 foot times. We ran some 1.06s and 1.07s in testing."

qualifying round 2

Bradford's performance fell off a touch in round 2, as it did for most of the field. "There were a bunch of Top Fuel and Funny Car oildowns in round 1, and we didn't go back out for the second round 'til about 8:15," said Tom. "By then it was not the session that everybody thought it would be, even though the conditions seemed right."

Bradford's engine builder Rob Schopf is at the track for the first time this year, and he may have some catching up to do to equal Schneider's performance. "We're not running the backhalf numbers that we should be," said Bradford. "Now that we've got the front of the track figured out, we've got to work on the backhalf. But we've got our 6 second engine in, number 018. It's been a good motor for us and it appears to be so this time as well.

"We've also got a full house here this weekend, this being a home race for us and The Sportsman Channel. We entertained a lot of their people here today. We have merchandise on the midway now, and our marketing guy Scott Gillette's here doing a real good job. All in all it was a good, solid day."
