Ahten Makes Final Round Appearance in Vegas

Las Vegas, NV. – Lady luck was on the side of Johnny Ahten at the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals last weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Ahten and his Island Renovations / Combust Filters dragster ended up on a very favorable side of the eliminations ladder after qualifying fifth. A semi-finals bye was a welcome sight and a half-track run set things up for an exciting final round. It was at this point that lady luck decided to wander off and grab something from the concession stand.

“All and all it was a great weekend,” Ahten said. “We all wanted another Wally, but it’s tough to complain. The hard work of our guys really showed. The Stump Puller was strong all weekend, and this was with our backup motor. To qualify with a 5.340/268.17 felt really good."

In the first round of eliminations, Ahten lit the win light over a tire-smoking Garrett Bateman with a 5.344/268.92. In the second round Johnny uncapped a 5.309/270.27 to take the win over Bill Litton’s 5.663/219.76. The 5.30 ties a Vegas best for Ahten Racing and the 270 mph is also their fastest speed at this track. The semi-finals bye due to a short field was a chance for Crew Chief Al Ahten, Howard Katano, and Johnny to see just what that right lane would handle. Before the race the tough decision was made to run hard to half-track and then shut it down to avoid parts breakage. The early numbers were positive after review and Bob Ahten, Chuck Costabile, and Kevin Colvell prepared the car for the finals.

In the other lane for the final round, Ahten Racing’s fourth in their last eight races, was CleanBoost Oil Teammate Joey Severance. As Ahten stood on the gas, cylinder #1 lost fire. Severance blasted down the track with a 5.269/269.78. The cylindrically challenged Stump Puller managed a 5.588/259.91 with seven pistons doing all the work.

I have quite a few people to thank for our success in Vegas,” added Ahten. “I want to first thank the Mac Tools Dragster from the Kalitta team. We entered a mutual agreement with them to scrub tires whenever we are able. The black rims really looked cool too. I would also like to thank Brett Winberg and Ted Christensen from Combust Filters. It was a treat having them out to the drags with us. Lastly, I have to thank my crew for giving me a really fast race car. We were joking after a string of runs in the 5.30’s we were going to get some shoe polish and put a dial-in on the windscreen,” Ahten said with a chuckle.

The Ahten Racing Team left The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with a runner-up finish, strong elapsed times, and some warm and fuzzy feelings about their tune-up. Those are going to have to last them a while because their next race is the July 11th Regional at Woodburn. Johnny plans on using the time off to build up their motor program, re-vamp the fuel system, and spend some time with his family. He did get Lady Luck’s phone number and is planning on giving her a jingle when he makes it back to the track. You can keep in touch with Ahten Racing at: www.facebook.com/JohnnyAhtenRacing
