Wilkerson blasts into the No. 11 spot

Pomona, Saturday: Funny Car pro, Tim Wilkerson waited until the last qualifying session to get his beautiful Levi, Ray & Shoup Chevrolet Monte Carlo into the field today at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals. But when he did it, he did it in grand style posting 4.772 at 317.57 mph.

Wilkerson, who has been in test mode for the past several races, showed that he might be on the right track. Wilkerson made four good qualifying runs, improving on each one.

"The car is coming around," said Wilkerson, "it gets better with each run. But right now, we just don't have enough fuel pump, and I knew that would happen. I've been trying to get fuel in it quick to keep it cooled off, and it's putting holes out when I do that. But when I run it like I need to run it, then on the other end it doesn't have enough. But anyhow, we've been trying a lot of stuff the last four or five races and it finally shows a lot of promise, I think. It's exciting for next year. And if we can get some blowers fixed up, to where they're more consistent, I think we'll be okay next year."

Wilkerson's first round opponent tomorrow is Ron Capps, who is in a close battle with John Force for the championship.

"Maybe we can be Force's best buddy tomorrow and whoop up on Capps," said Wilkerson. "We've got a chance. I just have to figure out a way to keep the thing lit on the other end, because it's beating itself up into junk down there without enough gas in it. But I think we can get that straightened out for tomorrow and it will run good."

Wilkerson's first qualifying pass of the season at this same track was a 4.77 and his last qualifying run of the year was a 4.77. And Wilkerson's first round opponent at the first race was Ron Caps. And his first round opponent at this the season finale is Ron Capps. Talk about déjà vu.
