Third Straight Vegas Victory Eludes G2

"That's not what we were looking for," said Matt Smith, driver of G2 Motorsports' Torco Race Fuels/Skull Gear Buell. After two straight NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle wins at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the G2 team left Vegas this year with their pockets turned inside out. "We were 60 footing good and running good to the eighth mile, but our bikes weren't running well the last 200-300 feet of racetrack. It was frustrating not to be able to run that last little bit."

"We haven't quite figured it out," said Jackie Bryce, the two-time AMA/Prostar championship winning crew chief who assists the G2 team at the track. "All the computer data looks good, but something is definitely wrong. The incrementals look good until the last 320 feet, and then we drop off."

<img src="http://www.nitromater.com/gallery/files/5/ChipEllisVegas1.jpg"align="right"borders="0"/>"I brought the laptop with me on the plane, and if I compare graphs with everywhere we ran good at, they're the same," pointed out DRAG Specialties/S&S Cycle Buell driver Chip Ellis. "You can lay the graphs right on top of each other."

"We ended up qualifying OK, though," said George Bryce, Jackie's husband and the G2 tuner/crew chief. "I was proud that Matthew was able to go a .10 and Chip a .13 and qualify in the top half of the field. That was the bright spot."

Smith qualified fourth and Ellis eighth. "I just got one good run on my bike," said Ellis. "I made one run in the third round that got me in the show, and if we hadn't done that I wouldn't have even been able to run on Sunday. We were going all kinds of directions with the timing and the fuel, especially with my bike. We struggled and worked and changed engines and never knew what was going on."

"We tried everything," agreed Smith. "It's just one of those things. I don't know how we can test awesome and come to the race and not be able to run the last little bit of racetrack.

"I qualified decent, but I made two big mistakes this weekend and I don't know why," continued Smith, who lost to Geno Scali in round 2 on raceday. "The first qualifying pass I didn't shift into sixth, and the last pass against Geno I didn't shift into sixth."

Ellis redlit by .013 against G.T. Tonglet in round 1. "I knew I had to go for it first round to have any chance at all," said Ellis.

"I saw G.T. Tonglet go a .30 something, Antron go a .20 something, Angelle a .20 something, and I couldn't believe the real fast Suzukis and Buells and the guys in the points chase all missed the tune-up," said George Bryce.

With the next race two weeks away and about three hours down the road in Pomona, California, the G2 rig and bikes will stay in Vegas. But the team knows they have a lot of work ahead of them for the season finale. "We air-freighted a motor back to the shop to try and work on it and figure out what's going on, but we're puzzled by it," said Ellis. "So we're gonna work on these motors and see if we can get them running better for Pomona so we can end the season on some sort of high note."

"We'll look at the motors and find out if we really lost power like it showed on the racetrack," said George Bryce. "I got to spend some time with Evan Knoll at Vegas. He's a busy man with all his race teams, so that was real cool. And I'm looking forward to Pomona because DRAG Specialties will have a hospitality area set up for their dealers in our pit. That'll be fun."
