Rowe in at No. 2; Key Race Awaits

MARTIN, Mich. (Aug. 5, 2006) - A day after qualifying in the provisional No. 1 spot, Danny Rowe was unable to improve upon his 6.130 best in his two qualifying runs Saturday and will open up Pro Mod eliminations at the IHRA Torco Race Fuels Northern Nationals in the No. 2 spot.

Rowe was overtaken in the final qualifying order by Mike Bell, who unleashed a stunning 6.108 to re-set the U.S. 131 Motorsports Park Pro Mod e.t. record and grab the pole position. Rowe's 6.13 from Friday held up for the No. 2 spot, his ninth top-half qualifying result of the 2006 season and fifth in six IHRA events. The No. 2 finish is tied for his best qualifying result of the season in IHRA, ADRL, and NHRA Pro Mod Challenge competition.

Sunday's eliminations will open with a pivotal battle between Rowe and No. 10 qualifier Quain Stott, who are third and second, respectively, in the IHRA Pro Mod points standings. The two drivers have already met twice this season in IHRA competition, with Rowe winning a first-round matchup four weeks ago in Milan, Mich., and Stott claiming a second-round battle earlier in the season in Grand Bend, Ont.

The winner of the Rowe-Stott matchup will get a jump on cutting into points leader Glen Kerunsky's lead. Kerunsky, a three-time IHRA finalist this season, could manage only a 6.21 best during qualifying and finished below the line in the 23rd spot, opening the door for drivers such as Rowe, Stott, fifth-place Tommy D'Aprile (No. 14 qualifier at 6.18), and sixth-place Carl Spiering (No. 4, 6.136) to decrease their deficits as the IHRA series heads into the final third of its season.

The 42-car Pro Mod competition - the largest major quarter-mile field of the 2006 season - finished qualifying with a number of hitters out of the top 16. Among the names on the DNQ list are Milan winner Mike Janis (No. 22), former IHRA world champion Shannon Jenkins (No. 19), Ed Hoover (No. 17), Rick Distefano (No. 20), Chip King (No. 24), and Burton Auxier (No. 26).
