Pomona, Calif. - It’s one thing to talk about good performances. It’s another to back it up on the race track.
That’s what Cory McClenathan and the Carrier Boyz Racing Top Fuel team did during preseason testing, and they’ll carry that successful momentum into the new NHRA POWERade Series season. The 47th CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals launches the 2007 campaign at Pomona, Calif.
The confidence gleaned from diligence and hard work during the winter was reinforced when McClenathan turned in his quickest quarter-mile run – 4.473 seconds, second-best during last week’s test sessions at Phoenix. Earlier, the veteran driver posted his fastest speed, 333.16 mph, on a 4.514-second lap.
Everyone on this maturing team contributed during the off-season and the obvious goal now is to reel off competitive numbers during the Winternationals and maintain a consistency that will put McClenathan among the top eight in the new Countdown to the Championship.
“This was a great way to start the new season,” said McClenathan. “We are excited because we have a new Brad Hadman race car and new clutch pieces and everything has been working like it’s supposed to.”
Crew chief Wes Cerny and assistant crew chief Tony Shortall “worked on different parts on the car and the tune-up since our last race in November,” added McClenathan. “Our performance showed a lot of promise and we should only get better. Wes wanted to try different setups so he kept making changes. He learned a lot. I’m proud of everyone on the team. The car’s new paint scheme looks really cool. I’m really looking forward to Pomona.”
McClenathan will be starting his 16th full season with aspirations of finishing in the top five and clinching the title with a stellar Countdown performance. He has 29 career victories in 49 finals, including a win at Richmond, Va., in October. McClenathan finished second in series points four times (1992, 1995 and 1997-98). He has never finished out of the top 10 when he ran the full schedule. He was ninth in 2005 and 2006. He drove in only one race in 2001.
“I am still looking for my first championship and I believe Mark and Andy (Carrier) have put together an excellent team,” said McClenathan. “They are committed to winning and that’s what we like to see.”
McClenathan grew up in Southern California and considers Pomona Raceway his home track. He has two wins (1992 and 2002) and one runner-up (1994) in the Finals to go with two second place finishes (1994 and 2003) in the Winternationals.
