PATRICK LEADING POINTS IN PRO STOCK “PROMISED LAND”

ROCKINGHAM, NC – Since the IHRA introduced the mountain motor formula into Pro Stock racing, Rockingham Dragway has served as the one place that has always coaxed the best performances out of this once “outlaw” style of factory hot rods. The timing is perfect for Robert Patrick as he heads into the revered facility leading the points for the Torco’s CompetitionPlus.com Pro Stock division.

Patrick’s objectives for this weekend’s IHRA Spring Nationals are exactly the same as they were three weeks ago with his San Antonio triumph. He wants to consistently be the quickest car in each session, qualify number one and win the race.

Rockingham only increases the intensity.

“You had better believe that we will be gunning for the top spot,” Patrick, of Fredericksburg, VA., said. “We have certainly proven that we have a good team and we accept nothing less than a winning effort. I really feel great about our chances this weekend and you know Rockingham is going to be a fast track.

“We plan on getting after it early and never letting up. The determining factor will be what Mother Nature and the track gives us.”

Patrick’s Purvis Ford-sponsored team has done a masterful job of showcasing the potential of their Bob Ingles-powered, Jerry Haas-built 2007 Shelby Cobra Mustang last May. The recent victory marked the third victory for the combination since debuting last May.

Thus far in 2007, Patrick’s Ford has left as the quickest.

Patrick conquered San Antonio from the top qualifier position (4.129) and despite breaking a reverser in the first round managed enough fortune to not only gear the factory hot rod but to defeat Elijah Morton with a low elapsed time 4.100. He also stopped formidable foes as Jeff Dobbins and Rob Mansfield before beating John Montecalvo in the final round.

Patrick will return to his familiar stomping grounds of quarter-mile racing in Rockingham after running eighth-mile in San Antonio. IHRA officials shortened the race course to 660 feet after the racing surface became compromised during the Friday evening session. The transition
had no ill-effects on Patrick.

“Racing is racing,” Patrick said. “You had to be on your game at both ends of the track. We’ve always felt that we had the horsepower to run the competition down if they got out on us early. I attribute that to my crew. They worked their butts off and made the transition seamless. That got us to where we are at today – leading the points.”
