[coverattach=1](Commerce, GA) During the running of the NHRA AC Delco Nationals in Gainesville, a prominent member of the Pro Stock community stated that “When Rodger Brogdon started qualifying in Pro Stock, it would be like opening up Pandora’s Box.” During the running of the Summit Racing equipment Southern National’s at ‘Georgia’s House of Speed’ this weekend that box was opened, much to the chagrin of the rest of the Pro Stock field.
Brogdon, at the wheel of Steve Kent’s Pontiac GXP, now cloaked in Charter Communication colors, ended qualifying in the lucky number 13 position at the Southern Nationals with a 6.624, 208.94 mph effort. In twelve Pro Stock starts, Rodger has now been in the field four times on Sunday, this time lining up against recent Houston winner Ron Krisher in round one.
Against Krisher, Brogdon got off the line first with a .056 reaction time to a .082 for Krisher, and then held on to win the race by .008 on a hole shot, 6.667 to Krisher’s quicker 6.649. “That felt great,” said Brogdon after the run, “looks like all the work this team has put in is finally paying off.”
In round two, Brogdon had to face off against another Cagnazzi powered machine, that being the Chevy Cobalt of reigning champ Jeg Coughlin. Jeg won the second round matchup in a good close race (6.646 to a losing 6.668), but back in the pits you would have thought it was Brogdon headed for the semi finals. “We’ve got ourselves a race car boys,” was Rodgers ecstatic cry back in the pits. “Do we have to skip next weekend,” he asked no one in particular, “I’m ready to go three or four races in a row!”
With a week off before the O’Reilly Midwest Nationals in St. Louis, the team will converge on the Cagnazzi race shop to continue working on and refining the Charter Communications Pontiac GXP. Several changes are in store as crew chief Tommy Utt continues to get a handle on the car and with the improvements this team has shown in just four short races, don’t look for anyone to put the lid back on Pandora’s Box anytime soon.
