NHRA Nitro Funny Car driver Scott Kalitta ready to run rounds in Atlanta

COMMERCE, Ga., (April 24, 2007) – Scott Kalitta and his recently DHL-decorated nitro-fueled Funny Car racer are more optimistic than ever heading into this weekend’s, April 26-29, Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga., a few miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, after the most consistent weekend yet of racing with their 8,000-horsepower flopper at the previous NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event in Las Vegas two weeks ago.

Kalitta and the DHL team posted a solid No. 9 qualifying effort in Las Vegas, but more importantly to the team, their yellow and red entry made clean and consistent laps down the quarter-mile in five of six laps on their way to a quarter-final result in the desert as DHL made their debut as primary sponsor on the race car.

“We finally found our consistency in Vegas,” Kalitta, a 45-year old resident of Palmetto, Fla. , said. “That’s something we’ve been trying to do since we brought our new Funny Car out at the beginning of last year, so to say that we are happy with Vegas is a huge understatement.

“We’re looking to Atlanta now to continue that momentum. I’m really excited to see what we can do there. Hopefully we’ll apply what we learned a couple of weeks ago and just keep getting better and going more and more rounds.”

Kalitta returned to the Funny Car class last season after many successful years at the helm of a Top Fuel dragster. He won the NHRA Top Fuel World Championship in 1994 and 1995 as well as 17 NHRA national event trophies, but got his first professional NHRA national event win under the carbon fiber canopy of a Funny Car in Houston in 1989.

The Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals begins Friday, April 26, for the Funny Car class with one qualifying session at 4:30 p.m. (ET), and then another qualifying session at 7:30 p.m. Two more qualifying sessions follow on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The top sixteen qualified cars will race Sunday in final eliminations beginning at 11:00 a.m.

All times and dates subject to change.

The Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals is the 6th of 23 national events in the 2007 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
