Norwalk, Ohio, May 19, 2007 -- At the inaugural NHRA Lucas Oil Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser and the Ohio Lottery, it was a day where records fell and thankfully the rain didn’t. Track conditions at Summit Motorsports Park were excellent all day. Although much of northern Ohio had rain Saturday afternoon, any rain that was headed toward the track dissipated.
Several notable records were set in front of a large crowd. Defending Lucas Oil Top Alcohol Funny Car champion Frank Manzo of Morganville , N.J. , secured his place as number one qualifier with a pass of 5.614 seconds at 260.91 mph which also set a new track record for E.T and speed. Right on Manzo’s tail is Marty Nothstein of Orefield, Penn. , who grabbed the second qualifying position with a pass of 5.656 seconds at 254.76 mph. Nothstein is also a gold medal Olympic bicyclist with seven world championships and 35 national titles.
The event had the quickest Top Sportsman field in NHRA Division 3 history. Leading the class is Scott Ray of Greenville , Ohio with a top speed of 219.36 mph and a pass of 6.521 seconds.
In the Super Stock class, Dave Layer of Dayton , Ohio moved the SS/KA record from 10.22 seconds to 10.12 seconds, driving his 1985 Camaro.
In Competition Eliminator, Bob Book of Frankfort , Ill. shattered the A/Dragster record with a pass of 6.383 seconds at 211.10 mph. The old record was 6.55 seconds at 206.64 mph. There are several other Competition Eliminator records that may fall during Sunday eliminations if the drivers make a second pass within the required 1%.
