Matt Smith beats Angie; upset in quarterfinals at Sonoma (1 Viewer)

[coverattach=1]Matt Smith won his first-round Pro Stock Motorcycle race against his wife
Angie Sunday in the FRAM Autolite Nationals, but he was upset by rival
Michael Phillips in the quarterfinals at Infineon Raceway.

His Al-Anabi Racing V-Twin left first and stopped the timer 1320 feet
later in 6.931 seconds at 192.22 mph. Angie’s Karl and Kim Klement-owned
Coffman Tank Trucks V-Twin followed at 6.971 at 187.70.

“It was a disappointing day,” Matt said. “I had to race Angie in the
first round – but that was just one of those things. It wasn’t the kind of
weekend we wanted to have.”

“It a horrible day,” added Angie. “That’s what my team gets for not
qualifying as well as we should have.”

Neither Smith nor Phillips wanted to stage first in their race, and when
they did, they left the line with almost identical reaction times. But it
was Phillips who lit the win light in 6.893 seconds, 195.08 mph to Matt’s
6.949 at 192.25.

The Smiths resume action Friday in the Mopar Mile-High Nationals at
Denver. It’s the third race in NHRA’s Western Swing.
