(Jungle) Clare Sanders has given me permission to post this on here.

We had driven down from Seattle to Boise to watch the Mallicoats and Boomgaarden race that weekend. They qualified #2, setting a spectacular track record speed of 204-mph (at 100-degree ambient temperature, 120-deg track, altitude adjust of 5,600-ft) at 6.89-sec. A faulty air-regulator left them with a slipping trans first round, so they went out early. The guys were on top of their game, and anticipating some fun racing at Bakersfield and Sacto in the next few weeks. The accident happened (after 4,000 miles of uneventful travel on this tour) on the way home after that race. Dale Boomgaarden drove back to Boise to help them after the accident, and he will instrumental in helping them get themselves, and their operation, back together. It’s a shame to see bad things happen to such good people – and we are just pleased to see them already on their way to recovery. They’ll be back… (Jungle) Clare Sanders.

Gary and Jerry Mallicoat, groundbreaking supercharged gas and turbocharged drag racers of yesteryear, both suffered fractured vertebrae in a towing accident on their way home from an event in Boise, Idaho on June 3rd The dually pulling their racecar trailer was traveling eastbound on I-84 when it drifted off the road just before an overpass. The vehicle hit the guardrail and tumbled down the embankment before ending up on the south side of the underpass on Hwy. 20, traveling close to 500 feet before landing upright.
The twin brothers reportedly both have compound stress fractures of their backs and will be in back braces for a few months. Both were wearing seatbelts. They are currently in St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise. Neither will require surgery, but will be fitted with back braces and released from the hospital in about a week. The truck and trailer were totaled, but their AA/GS ’68 Cuda appears to be repairable.

Thank god they were wearing thier seatbelts. Thats horrible news, but glad to hear thier both going to be okay. Both teams are fantastic competitors and its good to hear they will be back.

thank god they are ok! the mallicoat bros are legends of our sport and nostalgia racing history.

I heard Mike Lenord jack-knifed their trailer towing home from the Medfore race as well. Didn't seem too serious as they were at the race at Sacramento this past weekend with what seemed to be a new trailer and they ended up winning the event.

Sounds like everything could have been much worse. Thank god things turned out to be no worse than they were!
