<P>CONCORD, N.C. (Aug. 20) -- Reigning POWERade Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. and teammate Dave Connolly performed a unique ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday at zMax Dragway in Concord, N.C., by driving their 1,300-horsepower Victor Cagnazzi Racing Chevrolet Cobalts through long, smoky burnouts where they broke though a banner spanning the racetrack.

The drag racing duo was cheered on by track owner O. Bruton Smith, his son Marcus Smith, NHRA President Tom Compton, the Honorable Scott Padgett, mayor of Concord, and numerous dignitaries from Cabarrus County.

"This place is spectacular and it was a real honor to cut the ribbon with our racecars," Coughlin said as he emerged from his JEGS.com Chevrolet Cobalt. "The whole track is something to behold, it really is special. Everywhere you turn you're just blown away, from the moment you pull into the area and drive down Bruton Smith Boulevard; you know it's a unique place.

"The Smiths are very proud of their facility and rightfully so. I can't wait to get here in a few weeks and start the Countdown to 1 at the nicest drag strip on the planet. This place is it, bar none, and I know it will be well received by all the racers."

The inaugural Carolina NHRA Nationals run from Sept. 11-14 at zMax Dragway at Concord. The race is the first of six in the Countdown to 1, where the top 10 competitors in each professional will fight it out for the 2008 championships. Coughlin will be trying for his fifth NHRA title this year.
