NHRA POWERade driver Ron Capps from Carlsbad, CA leads the first day qualifiers of Nostalgia Nitro Funny Cars at the historic 49th March Meet held at Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, CA. Capps in a Mopar Hemi-powered nitro funny car tuned by Jeff Gaynor was the only car in the 5-second range in Friday's first qualifying session. Capps, driving Bob Godfrey's "Oblivion Express" made an off the trailer 5.987 run at 236.09 mph, the first time in the 5's for the vintage flopper.
Stephen Romanazzi from Visalia, CA sits in the #2 spot in his "Warrior" Vega after running a 6.086 at 233.58 mph, tuned by drag racing veteran Donnie Couch. Fourteen vintage nitro funny cars are vying for the 8-car field.
Qualifying resumes with two sessions Saturday at 12:30 and 4:00 PM.
