ASHLEY THROWS DOWN THE GAUNTLET IN BRISTOL ELIMINATIONS

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Mike Ashley gave the Pro Modified field a reminder why he’s a two-time world champion during the first round of the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, Tenn. The mortgage banker from New York’s Long Island drove to the quickest winning elapsed time to eliminate Harold Laird.

Ashley driving a two-race old 1968 Camaro thundered to a 6.001 elapsed time at 240.68 miles per hour to easily defeat the No. 9 qualifier Laird, who was off the pace with a 6.288 elapsed time.

“This was an absolutely great run and just goes to show you what this team is capable of,” Ashley said. “The car left strong and hard and basically on a run that good, you are just along for the ride. This was a great momentum builder for our team.”

Ashley entered the first round of eliminations as the eighth-quickest qualifier on the strength of Friday’s 6.065, 239.50.

He will race Jay Payne in Sunday’s second round of eliminations.

“We want three more wins on Sunday just like today,” Ashley added. “We’ve been to the winner’s circle here in Bristol several times before and each time, the experience has gotten better.”
