That is classic!
Seriously though, it's soo easy to miss the tuneup, forget the throttle stop, redlight, or forget to tighten a hose that you would not be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that it was a dive.
Look at all the legit "whoopsies" this year and take your pick..
"What do you mean dive? So and so had the same thing happen 3 months ago and nobody complained then."

This wouldn't have even been an issue if Jeff Arend hadn't taken that 2+ second light at Maple Grove against Del.
That was a terrible way to dive. At least meake it look like you were trying to run.

First, I wondered to myself how they would make sure that none of the ones who weren't in the top eight could not win. After looking at the point structures, and looking at past years winners in each catagory, I see that the points leaders now have more points than has ever been earned in the past several years by the winner in any of the pro catagories.
Then we have the countdown polices in effect. So if one of the top 4 doesn't get in their 4 qualifying runs, they get in anyway.
Now we have "team orders". While it may give the appearance of "Just don't make it look so blatent", it also gives the appearance that, "We didn't plan this very well, so the silly rules are put into effect, and we'll make them up as we go along."
I've been around Drag Racing and been an NHRA member since the 60's, so I've seen a lot go on, but this just takes the cake. So now, I'm joining PJ's bandwagon in the "FAKE" countdown to the championship.

I disagree, I think the way the Worsham camp did it was exactly the way it should be done. It was all above board, and there was no trying to hide it. If I were in their shoes, with the same sponsor on both cars, I would have done the same thing. It was a smart business decision, and that's what NHRA has become, a "business". Besides, NHRA is the one who designed this "countdown", they had to have known that things like this would happen, and now they just need to deal with it.

Re: Team Orders Addressed?
Just saw an interesting post on (ahem) another board. His suggestion for "diving withing the rules" for want of a better term is to load the car up with 91%, then run the race for real.. If the "diver" car takes the win light, damned if they wont fail fuel check---kind of an interesting idea---not like no one has failed fuel checks before....just a thought

I thought that they did it the most honourable way possible. They made the best possible decision for their TEAM and they did it right in front of everybody. Very simple. My question is, what would the NHRA have them do? It would've removed drama from their precious "Countdown" if Jeff had run straight up and won. It like the NHRA just realized what a big turd they just made and they are trying to cover it up by piling dirt on it.
Even covered in dirt, it's still a turd.

Re: Team Orders Addressed?
Does anyone remember a few years ago when Burnstein's Team "FORGOT" to put oil in the motor, and they shut it off at the line...
Now we know they are not a "Team" car so it was a legit error... however what would NHRA say if that happened to a Team car who was racing its team mate.. & the other car needed the win...
"IS it a DIVE" if you forget to put oil in the motor ?

I don't know if it was honorable, but it was smart. If Del would have screwed up, left before the tree was activated, crossed the center line and was DQ'd, failed fuel check or weight, Jeff would have gotten the win. If Jeff stayed in the pits, and Del was DQ'd there would have been a bye the next round.

Re: Team Orders Addressed?
Hopefully the suits realize how flawed this points system is and we can see a return to the legitimate points system for 2008. We shouldn't have to wait long because last year the schedule and subsequent Clowndown was released the Wednesday before Indy. 8 words I do not want to hear from Tom Compton are "The fans are in for a real treat" past treats include the new points system had moving races at record setting tracks to the hot part of the year, fans in Phoenix beware.

Now THAT is MY vote for post of the year.
Politely sums up my feelings on the ASSCAR copied "countdown" too.

Re: Team Orders Addressed?
I've been working too hard.... I just came on Mater to check things out before going home, and I see this post.
Where the heck is Jon Asher when you need him!
Would LOVE to hear HIS take on this.
