NHRA stop and think
Wow, it seems just about every week now that there is a new article on nhra.com that is futilely trying to praise the horrible new point system. It seems that they think that if they say it enough then it must be true. Beat us over the head with the plan, bombard us supposed interviews and maybe, just maybe we'll accept fake championships.
I would think that if you have to work that hard to sell it then maybe its not worth selling.
There is a difference between promoting and begging people. Maybe they are still trying to talk themselves into the idea of going to this welfare system.
NHRA there is still time to make the right move. Restore the true championships.

Re: NHRA stop and think
To be honest, I hope the champion this year would not have been the champ without this system. Then maybe a top team will pitch a fit and it will go back to the way it should be. Best performing car all YEAR should be the champ, not the best for 8 races.

Re: NHRA stop and think
I've lost a lotta respect for some of the teams that I normally cheer for. Claiming they now have a shot at a championship because of this. What happened to earning it? If they make it easier for you and basically hand it out cheaply, is it really a championship????
Should we reward teams a few extra points when they can't run a in the
4.4's so they don't fall two far behind?

Re: NHRA stop and think
Great post, PJ. But I think the sad reality is.... the gavel has fallen, and the decision sure as heck won't be reversed. Granted, they might change it in a few years or so, after they see how it all shakes out; but for now..... it is what it is. They better hope a few people "who might not ordinarily have a shot" actually win a championship within a year or 2. Otherwise the credibility of the system goes out the window in my opinion.

Re: NHRA stop and think
At the risk of getting crucified for this... here it is.
I wasn't all for the new point system and still at times have a problem with it. But then I think about when the Seattle Mariners won 116 games in a single season to set an American League record. They won more games in 2001 than anyother team in the AL or the NL but they sure didn't win the championship.
They only thing I am hoping for out of this is that smaller funded teams might be able to saty in the mix with the higher funded teams and hopefully be able to gat more teams out there in the mix because of this system. Right now I see NHRA racing going the way of NASCAR and I don't like it. I understand that it is the same type of points system as NASCAR, but hopefully NHRA's system was implemented soon enough that it could entice more sponsors into the arena of winng a championship in the lower cast NHRA than in the stupidly expensive NASCAR with a new team.
Then I again... I am probably just wishful thinkn'

Re: NHRA stop and think
Even NASCAR made revisions to thier system. NHRA needs to let the racers race, and let the cars run.

Re: NHRA stop and think
"stop and think" are two different things... Multi tasking is required...
The heart of a season long competition is to determine the best racer over the course of a season. This is no longer true with the changes in the championship series.
I admire the courage to try and change things to increase media coverage and interest, and to provide key players more air time.
That said, I believe the integrity of the series can potentially be called into question due to the manner in which the changes have been implemented. Hopefully all will work out (mathmatically) this season so next year a real championship can be had without further jeopardizing the integrity of the sport.

i agree with you. put yourself in the shoes of a potential sponsor who knows
they want to be in motorsports, but not sure how or where; who's giving
most exposure vs. cost; exposure being the key word here.
Sponsors in NHRA pro drag racing have remained fairly stagnent over the years;
some come, some go, but very few stay long term (budweiser, castrol).
in an effort to keep more long term sponsors, even if it means revamping
the points system for entertainment's sake, i say let's give it a try.

Re: NHRA stop and think
"The Don" posts on here from time to time, wonder what he would say after putting all the money into Tony and Alan, having the most points in the old system, and not coming away with the championship? I think he may be a little pissed off, I know I would be if I was a team owner.

Re: NHRA stop and think
Not again, I thought the crying about the new system was over. Give it a chance, it should be real entertaining. If you don't like the new system at the end of November when the champs are crowned, then start your crying and *****ing.

Re: NHRA stop and think
There has to be some PS guys liking the new system. The pace GA is setting, the Championship may have been all but over by Indy (instead of just beginning).

If the top fuel championship is not as close as last years then can I expect you to be leading the charge of those of us who ***** and cry??? After all isn't a closer championship race why we are being forced this welfare system?
