These days, one could argue that for some of the top drivers.... what you see is what you get. With big sponsor commitments, driving & P.R. promotions, it can easily be a full time career.

Doug Kalitta - to this very day is President & CEO of the Doug Kalitta Aviation Group; which includes Kalitta Charters (a business/executive aircraft charter service and maintenance facility), Kalitta Charters II (an on-demand, fly-for-hire air cargo carrier), DK Turbines (an aircraft parts supplier) & flyacharter.com (a private jet charter trip booking/brokering service).

Connie Kalitta is currently President & CEO of Kalitta Air - a cargo aircraft charter carrier with on-demand and scheduled transatlantic flights, as well as President of Kalitta Leasing, an aircraft sales, acquisition & brokerage service.

Scott Kalitta in the past has owned & ran a Marina, served as President of a couple spin-off air cargo carriers under his Dad's unmbrella.

These days Hillary Will & Dave Grubnic are lucky enough to call racing thier profession & livelihood.

There's lots more out there but the memory is playing tricks. One interesting thing to note...practically all of the named superstars (both here and in previous posts)...got to the top without a lot of startup money. Kinda belies the old adage that you have to be rich to start with. Sure does help tho!!!

Happy Thanksgiving all.

Thank you, Dave..and your memory does just fine. If I could remember 1/2 of what you've forgotten..I'd be 1 happy camper!!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Don, from Bill Simpson's autobiography, 'Racing Safely, Living Dangerously'. I'm about 60 pages in, it's a good read:"Until I started the business, I had moved from job to job, doing anything I could to help fund my racing. For example, during the period when I made that first parachute, I was working in the sound department at MGM studios. I had dated a girl whose father was a sound man, and he got me the gig. I'd go out to the movie locations and work as a cable boy, hauling rolls of wire and helping the guys who carried those big boom microphones. The job had its perks: The money was great, I got to see a lot of famous movie stars-all of 'em, it seemed, worked for MGM-and best of all, I was a day laborer, meaning I only worked when I felt like working. Most weeks I worked one or two days in th sound department and spent the rest of my time sewing parachutes together. Before long, the chute business became a genuine occupation and then an obsession."

Anyone else remember?
Del went straight from racing BMX bicycles to Funny Car. I saw him that first year he ran at Columbus riding his bike around the pit area.
