NHRA PURSUING IHRA TRACKS?

Evidently the NHRA isn’t satisfied with just getting the Baders to switch the sanctioning of their Norwalk Raceway Park over to the National Hot Rod Association but they are also actively courting many other IHRA-sanctioned tracks. Illinois dragstrip Cordova Dragway Park, which has long been a stalwart IHRA track and has been the site of IHRA national events in the past, confirmed to DRO that they and other tracks in the area have been contacted by the NHRA trying to convince them to switch sanctioning bodies. A track representative told DRO that they were at least listening to what the NHRA was offering in the way of benefits. [10-3-2006]

This isn't anything new. Both sanctioning bodies actively court tracks to change affiliation.

NHRA would sanction a sidewalk if it meant it would take it from the hands of the IHRA. This is nothing new. They go after any track they can.

I would imagine it is far less expensive to "buy" a track than to build one...

Well, looks like both Cordova and Eddyville made the change. Definitely cool that Cordova got a divisional and Eddyville got a National Open out of the deal.

This happends every few years. Obviously both sanctioning bodies love to promote the addition of new tracks. So you basically get some flip-flopping of sanctions when they really start to pursue tracks. Each one has their own good points and bad points. One advantage to NHRA, is they don't "force" you to use a single insurance carrier, like the IHRA. They give you coverage guidelines that must be met and therefore you can do some shopping around for underwriters, albeit the shopping is pretty limited. IHRA only has one carrier and that is Wisenberg, but one advantage to them is you don't have to prepay your insurance ahead of time. Anyway, not to get too far off the subject, you'll see NHRA lose some tracks to IHRA and a few years later the cycle reverses. It's always happening.

Good to hear that from you. I wouldn't think NHRA would want to start anything as you are dumping truckloads of money into their business with sponsorships. A fight would just cost tons of money and accomplish nothing anyway. Both sanctioning bodies will do just fine by themselves.

Being totally selfish sure would neat to have NHRA buy Martin 131 so I can have a race 25 minutes from my house! Michigan needs a NHRA race!
