In the lower part of the front fairing just behind the front wheel is a large air intake. During the tow to the staging area, the teams use a snap-on cover that protects debris from entering.

Of course, that's in the days before non-factory air scoops were allowed so this may not apply to the H-D and Buell bikes.

And, sorry, but it's been illegal to cool fuel in a Pro Class for more years than I can remember. No fuel jugs stored in coolers, no cool cans, etc..

So from what I'm understanding he was "cheating"? The way Gann reacted it seemed as though it was okay to cool it as long as its not going on when your racing....I'm confused lol

I thought they were fueled in the lanes by NHRA with spec fuel? Or maybe i was dreaming? If thats the case isn't it OK to chill an empty container between rounds? technically your not violating the chilled fuel rule.

I can see DQ'ing the run....just like if you scale too light....but to to DQ him from the race is a bit much. imo

That's exactly how I see it, Al. If it were a factor of legal or illegal, the tech guys that told him he was DQ'd should've put it that way. Not say something about the fact that another rider could hit it.

I didn't state the rule clearly enough, but look at Jeff Foster's message.

(emphasis mine)

Rules page 63
Fuel/Air: Any method of artificially cooling or heating fuel Prohibited

It's possible to break more than one rule by doing a single thing. Unsecured pieces are also illegal.

I have a whole bunch of respect for the entire Gann operation, but I can't see throwing rocks at Tech for this one.

Of course it is OK when in the lanes. You violate the rule when you take the green with it still there.

Re: Shawn Gann - DQ'd?

if gann was not CHEATING he would had laid the ice back off before they
made that run. he does a very hard side to side burnout. so if the ice bag
was laying on the fuel tank it would have fallen off at the burn out. i think
they had to put the ice bag in a place so the nhra could not see it. all that
nhra check for is to see if your tank is empty by taking off the fuel line.
this is not the frist time they have been caught. they have been caught
2 or 3 time. i think nhra should put in place a rule for cheating by a one
year suspension if caught cheating more than 2 times. he is not the only
teams out there chaeting.

Re: Shawn Gann - DQ'd?

At Indy this year, an unnamed (not top 10) PSB racer was escorted from the premises (entire trailer, hauler, etc) by NHRA and police after the rider had a confrontation with a rent-a-cop in the staging lanes. I guess NHRA is getting serious about enforcing the rules, at least in PSB?

We saw a girl riding on the Jegs golf cart at Charlotte that was told to get off. We didn't hear the conversation of course, but she was riding with them down the return road, and one of the NHRA officials must have stopped to see her credentials and she didn't have something she should have had. I know there are some people that 'pass' around a starting line pass to friends and such so they can get the experience of being there. Apparently, they are cracking down on that as well. She had to walk back to the starting line alone, and that had to be very embarassing. They were nearly half track when this happened. The Jegs crew were discussing (one guy was mad and arguing) with the official, but she was still on foot walking back. One of the guys hopped off and caught up with her and walked with her.
