Just so you guys know it isn't just as simple as shooting a lazer and breaking it up.
Lithotripsy requires general anesthesia, not something that you get over in 12 hours. A lithotriptor uses a big "spark plug" looking device to shoot high-intensity acoustic pulses aimed at the stone.

They give a local pain killer just to numb a little and the doc takes what is like a pair of pliers and goes in the whacker to get it out. I promise you, you are wide awake and you'll never feel pain like this. The kidney stone was a cakewalk compare to the retrieval of the stint.
The stint(s) I had came with their own retrieval device- a length of suture. Dr. Vise said I could remove it myself after a week. Yea-right-whatever!

Re: Matt Smith - Kidney Stone!

These things are NASTY. I had one for the first time in '01. I was on the phone at my desk, and suddenly a pain came over me that I had never felt before, and it literally brought me to my knees. I actually crawled to my operations guy's office next door, and asked if he had any Advil. He looked at me kind of panicked and said, "Advil!? You need a ****ing ambulance!!!" My partner drove me to the ER, and I was kicking his dashboard all the way, the pain was indescribable. You absoulutely can't find a way to even get comfortable to deal with the pain, if that makes sense. Fortunately it was small enough to pass within a couple days, and it was hard to believe something so tiny could cause so much pain. Anyways, congrats Matt, you're an animal!

BTW, I believe some of the ways to prevent them are obviously drinking a lot of water, also drinking cranberry juice, and taking a magnesium supplement.

Took some major stones (sorry couldn't resist) to ride that pain out yesterday and get the win. Way to go

Re: Matt Smith - Kidney Stone!

I know how he feels on the female side of it! I have passed a couple, but I still have one that is too big to pass, so when it decides it wants to move around, it feels like I am going 5 rounds with Mike Tyson just pounding me in the kidney. I have talked to the doctor about having it blasted, but then I will have 10,000 little peices to pass! Damned if you do, Damned if you don't!

Several years ago when I worked at Billy Bob's, the House Engineer (also Production Manager, Bear Crossnoe) was "tweeking" the system during the sound check for Trisha Yearwood. I went and stood in front of the bottom end speakers and he cranked up the white noise and vibrated the hell out of me! About 15 minutes later.......I passed a stone!!! It was a great feeling!!!

There are diffrent types of stones too. Mine is a caffine based stone. As a kid, I would never drink enough water. Why drink water when a soda is sooooo much more tastier!! The other kind is a calcium based stone. Too much for the kidney to process.

Congrats to Matt and the team for a great show of pain tolerance!!! You are a TROOPER!!!

Now that's a very innovative way of dealing with a stone.

I've never had one and hope I never do. I did have a bladder infection once and peeing then was a plenty enough unpleasant experience.

Nunzio, I know what you're talking about. I had one several yrs ago, didn't know what the pain was at the time, so I went to the local fire station because there isn't a hospital or urgent care close. The fire fighters said it was a kidney stone and called an ambulance. By the time the ambulance arrived in 20 minutes, the pain had stopped, so I had my Dad drive me to the hospital about 15 miles away. Big mistake. We were going over the Arkansas River bridge and I was screaming to my Dad to 'stop the f'n car!' He asked why, and I said 'so I can jump off the f'n bridge', thankfully he didn't stop because I would have jumped. Took 3 months to pass it. I drink maybe one soft drink a month now. All I can say is that Matt Smith must be one tough hombre.
