Wally had it wrong. He said the cars are the stars and that simply is not true. People are the reason that brings in fans. As was stated in the article the only person or group of people who really seem to understand this is the Force camp. Granted we have some other drivers who are getting recongnition but not at that level.

Here is something else to throw out..... Why not bring back names on the cars???? I can remember when you knew the car, driver and sponser of a car simply by the name on the side. Yeah i know marketing people don't want to give up that valuable space but what they fail to recognize that if people have a car and drive to root for, their product will also get more attention. Arising tide carries all boats.

Just a note here. Alan Loder has a t shirt coming out that will be "debuted" at Sears Point (Infineon, tomato tomahto, whatever) that will be presented to Mr. Don Schumacher himself that may prove to be the answer to Hot Rod's T shirts. As long as it doesn't deteriorate into plain ol' name calling, questioning of one's family heritage, and accusations of cheating, I think rivalries can be a real draw for fans. Heck, remember how much good Dougzilla did with the fundraising aspect of the Dougzilla shirts? Hope the "rivalry" continues and grows within the bounds of good taste and reasonably good sportsmanship. Oh, and if you are interested in the shirt details, pm Alan Loder and he can fill you in. There may be just a few left, but they are going fast. (end of shameless plug)

Re: Vandergriff Speaks on Rivalries

Bob V. is a very smart and genuinely nice guy. I think he hits the nail on the head. In fact, I would like to see him win a race, step out of the race car and run the NHRA. Pretty fat chance of the last two happening but he would certainly kick it up to another level. He "gets it".

BTW, any Tom Compton sightings yet?

Over the years Kenny B vs any female got to the point it was comical. Black vs Pink vs Waterman was really about who was the best engine builder. And yeah, the adds in Drag News were fun. As long as my Favorites win, I could care less who's in the other lane. And for the most part, I'm not overly distressed if one of them drops a race.

I'm not into HYPE. It was Angels vs the entire AL and Dodgers vs the entire NL... If you have to generate HYPE, then you have nothing to sell in the first place.

But, in the last couple of years, there are only Two drivers I'm happy to see loose... Rod Fuller and Bobby V

Re: Vandergriff Speaks on Rivalries

I've been saying the same thing for years. But what happens when a rivalry happens to break out? NHRA runs out with two buckets of ice water, throws it on the dogs in question, and then muzzles them. Everything and everyone MUST be 100% politically correct, and as squeaky clean and boring as NHRA can get em. They'll never see the light. Ever. Case in point: Millican/Herbert. Nope, better we resign ourselves to getting an occasional whiff of pit nitro and stop out daydreaming. Rivalries ain't gonna happen.
