Is there a conclusive list anywhere of the closest margins of victory in the pro and sportsman classes of NHRA competition?

Some guys here at work were talking about NASCAR's quickest, and I know it isn't close to NHRA's quickest.

I've seen .0000 margins of victory in several of the Sportsman categories and .0001 in Pro Stock - check on NHRA.com for the "Who Got The Light Award" for reac-by-race and season-best MOVs.

I've had at least two that were 0.000 on the time slip before they starting carrying out to the 10,000th. Since that time I've had a .0002, a .0003, and a couple .0004s.

Last year my son lost in a Top Dragster final by .0002 (two ten thousands)

Kind of a bummer. At 190 mph thats about 5/8 in.

I was reading this and I could have sworn that Jim Yates was involved in a .0000 MOV, (Denver I think) but I couldn't remember which end he came out on. Thanks to a very popular search engine I came up with this. Jim also came our on the losing end when Richie Stevens won the award in 2006.

The timing system will determine the true winner well beyond the clocks ability to display the times. It may in fact go well into the nanoseconds.

Compulink (if I remember correctly) measures to th 7th digit, shows to the
4th digit (ten thousandth). Jeff Foster will jump in and correct me if I'm wrong.

Best/closest race that comes to my mind was 2006 SS finals @ Joliet. Gary Stinnett & Michael Mans raced to a 0.0000 dead heat finish. Two great young drivers in a classic SS final round.

A great race here, a dead heat according to the numbers, Stinnett gets the holeshot and just misses running down Mans. Michael Mans' MOV: 0.0000 seconds (approximately 0 inches).

DRAG RACE CENTRAL coverage.

The first NHRA national event I ever raced at, Ennis, TX 1986. I had just finish my 86 Corvette running in S/G. First round, I got there first but broke out 9.898. This is when pot for hitting perfect 9.90 was about $10,000.

I don't think the average NASCAR fan is ready for the concept of "breaking out." If you really want to glaze their eyes, try explaining the Comp Eliminator and Competition Index Correction (CIC) to them. Probably best to stick to the "got there first on a green light" classes.

Larry, I have been following Nascar since local late model driver Terry Bivins drove RCR, that's a long time ago. I would say close finishes in Nascar are minute compare to Drag Racing. I think that most readers on mater know about the Sportsman categories and would agree that close finishes are a way of life in this sport.

Mike C. is right. The closest I've seen in the Pro's was Yates over Jeter at the 2001 Mile High's. Even though the below notes only say it was .000 it was .0000 as they showed the replay on Winston Vision (or whatever it was called in '01) about 7 or 8 times. As Mike C. posted, Yates ended up winning the 'Who got the Light' Award for 2001 with an MOV of 0.0000

Jeter with a great light and Yates with the power to chase him down and take the win light in a mathematical dead heat. Margin of victory = 0.000 seconds (approximately 0 inches). Yates will give up lane choice to Edwards.

I thought I remember reading about a Pro Stock race in Europe last year where the MOV went to 6 figures.

Besides, age is just a state of mind, and I still travel so much (even without NHRA national events) that sometimes I'm not sure what state I'm in, so I don't mind......
