McDonalds was the primary sponsor and he was driving for Larry Minor. Ed McCulloch drove the McDonalds T/F car for Minor.

Re: Cruz 1992 Championship

He was driving for Larry Minor, and sponsored by McDonalds. It was their first year of sponsorship. His crew chief was Bernie Fedderly for the first few races, including when he set an et record in Houston with a 5.10. They had some issues with blower backfires during testing and at Phoenix that year. Fedderly resigned, or was fired, not long after the Houston race and was replaced by Larry Meyer.

He used to say "hamburger stand".

Sweet championship that year. I remember it fondly for the particular reason Cruz beat Force that year.

Re: Cruz 1992 Championship

Was that also the year he and Force had the full-track peddlefest at Dallas?? I was there for that - and it was pretty intense. That was the only time I've ever seen 2 crews on the starting line with nobody having a clue as to who won.

You bet it was Chris. That had to be the most exciting run I have ever seen. I remember the TNN TV broadcast, Brock Yates said "it looked like a short track stock car race in a bullring". If I recall correctly, I believe Force bit his tongue and (as John said) he pee'd himself after the repeated impacts with the wall.

I remember that run being on TNN live and watching it happen. If I remember right John Force called Cruz's car the "Hamburger from hell" car on a few different occasions.

Force vs Pedregon at Dallas in the finals, best one I ever saw! I'm glad I hung around for it, they had some Nasty wrecks pushing the race late by over an hour!

Ennis is notorious for wrecks for some reason. I have seen tons of them there. More than any other track. Even sportsman cars wreck there alot. We have almost lost several friends there and did lose one. Thats why they call it the Murderplex.

But back to this thread, that was awesome between Force and Cruz. Ofcourse I was hoping for a different outcome but oh well. I was there and I remember it like yesterday. And Joe's right , they had alot of crashes that day. I know Mark Oswald remembers Ennis alright, I know for sure he burnt 2 cars to the ground there maybe 3.

Re: Cruz 1992 Championship

Oswald had a nasty fire/crash in the Petosa Bros. Daytona. It was in the semi finals, and he was giving Cruz a run for his money unill it let go. Also, I'm pretty sure Doug Herbert had a blow over that day too.

P.S.

What was the bet and did you win or lose?

Was that the one that blew the body off the car, and Mark was waving his hand around looking for the non-existent escape hatch because his visor was covered with oil and he couldn't see that the body was long gone?

Re: Cruz 1992 Championship

Richard Hartman had a doozie there one year, too. Back to Pedregon, that McD sponsorship was huge for NHRA back then. He even made Neil Bonnet's "Winners" show on TNN after that.
