But back to this thread, that was awesome between Force and Cruz. Ofcourse I was hoping for a different outcome but oh well. I was there and I remember it like yesterday. And Joe's right , they had alot of crashes that day. I know Mark Oswald remembers Ennis alright, I know for sure he burnt 2 cars to the ground there maybe 3.
Doug Herbert had a blowover in the First rd.

Nope, that was the Motorcraft Probe years earlier.

Paul's right, it was in the late 80's when Mark O burnt two Motorcraft cars up. Either back to back years or 2 in 3 years, I dont remember exactly b/c I was only about 8!

I remember another fire there, perhaps Al Hoffman. Blew the body off at 3/4 track, he went sailing through the lights on fire. I remember the track announcer on the far end commenting that they saw him waving, motioning to the Safety Safari to come & get him as he passed them. They later figured out he was reaching for the parachute levers - which had blew off.

I think it was in '89 and I believe it was the Motorcraft car. All I know is it looked like an atomic bomb when it blew.

The Motorcraft probe burned to the ground at the end of the first round in 1990. Oswald beat Al Hofmann and Richard Hartman ended up with a single in round 2. Mike Dunn ended up beating Jim White in the final when White's blower belt fell off.

Re: Cruz 1992 Championship

The first big boomer and only one I remember Oswald having in Dallas was in 90 in the Probe, up against Al Hoffman in RD one.

Edit* Oops, Didn't see Brians post. Didn't exactly burn to the ground, as the body was ripped off by the force of the explosion. Smashed up against the wall with the cylinders hanging out the side of the chassis.

Jim White also set the National record at the time with a 5.140

Re: Cruz 1992 Championship

Mark Oswald looks much the same these days and is still one of the good guys in the sport. Mark gave my dad's friends the blower belt off Mike Ashley's Eric Faulkner car at Indy last year.

Back to the topic, I once won a bet from a friend about this very topic. The friend argued with me for hours back in 2000 when Bobby Labonte won the NASCAR Cup Championship for Joe Gibbs that it was a trophy to add Joe's collection which included Super Bowls and a Funny Car Championship. I asked him which Funny Car championship and he said Cruzer in '92 in the McDonald's flopper. My friend was incredulous that I would even suggest that Cruzer drove for anyone besides Gibbs in '92. Let's just say I won that bet and have not let that friend live it down.

Re: Cruz 1992 Championship

LOL That's awesome, Michael! I forgot about Jim White running a number. The big FC run I remember, which was probably either that year or the next.... was Bernie Fedderly blasting Ed McCullough to a 5.13 vs. Don Purdomme. Last 2 cars of the day. That was incredible. When the scoreboard lit that up.... you could almost hear the entire grandstand all together saying "HOLY SHXX"!
