Re: Paul Smith
Don Lampus?
I don't know if he has raced a funny car recently, but he also fits with Compplus's teaser about a former rookie of the year coming back ...
Robert Reehl?
He has a couple of funny cars and used to race Top Fuel ...
Best 2 guesses I got ...

Doesn't he also drive Virgil's nostalgia flopper?
I think we may have a winner ....

Re: Paul Smith
I'm thinking Mike Smith, He has a current IHRA license, and you can get an NHRA license if you have one of those, and also he drove top fuel in the late 90's for Ralph White, and for his dad in the early 2000's.

Re: Paul Smith
Just because someone has an IHRA T/F license it does not crossover to the NHRA side to easily...You must lobby and kiss-up to the right people..and many on the IHRA side have been turned-down by the NHRA brass recently..

Re: Paul Smith
Oh..you can obtain an NHRA T/F license but if someone just shows up to race w/ a IHRA license @ an NHRA event you will not be allowed to run...It takes a few weeks/months to politic/sell yourself to the NHRA brass...if they like ya..

I didn't mean pull in at the race and go, I did say you "can get one" meaning apply to get an NHRA license. I'm sorry I didnt spell that out for you.

Re: Paul Smith
I knew what you meant after reading..When Doug Foley first got involved w/ the NHRA side they made it a little difficult for him to participate and his then teammate Rick Cooper had to do some MAJOR butt-kissing to get NHRA's approval for the sanctioning body cross-over...It took appx 6 months...
They even turned town an IHRA T/F driver for the crossover: Can you say TORCO...

Re: Paul Smith
Not to stick up for NHRA or IHRA, but if you meet NHRA's performance requirements it is just a matter of paperwork to get your license cross over. Actually I think they do a very good job of honoring runs made from one sanction to another. I am only chiming in because I have been a part of 5 IHRA to NHRA crossovers. All went very smooth and very quick.
I hope Paul's new driver is either himself or his Mike. Paul was and is one of the greatest racers out there, and his kids do a great job of keeping his name well respected.
Hope alls well,
Bobby Lagana Jr.
