Updated Countdown vs Old Points
If I did my math right, here is the way things shake out. Sorry about the formatting.
TF Countdown
------------------------------------
1 Fuller 3135
2 Dixon 3083 -52
3 Bernstein 3074 -61
4 Schumacher 3068 -67
TF OLD
------------------------------------
1 Fuller 1585
2 Dixon 1426 -159
3 Bernstein 1376 -209
4 Schumacher 1354 -231
5 Todd 1165 -420
6 Troxel 1139 -446
7 Vandergriff 1120 -465
8 Herbert 1033 -552
9 Kalitta 1014 -571
10 Bazemore 989 -596
FC Countdown
------------------------------------
1 T Pedregon 3147
2 Scelzi 3056 -91
3 Hight 3048 -99
4 Capps 3034 -113
FC OLD
------------------------------------
1 Capps 1360
2 T Pedregon 1342 -18
3 Hight 1297 -63
4 Scelzi 1194 -166
5 Beckman 1162 -198
6 Ashley 1128 -232
7 J Force 1103 -257
8 Worsham 1018 -342
9 Head 956 -404
10 C Pedregon 914 -446
PS COUNTDOWN
------------------------------------
1 Anderson 3136
2 Coughlin 3102 -34
3 Connolly 3078 -58
4 A Johnson 3033 -103
PS OLD
------------------------------------
1 Anderson 1861
2 Connolly 1775 -86
3 Coughlin 1519 -342
4 A Johnson 1227 -634
5 Line 1175 -686
6 K Johnson 1123 -738
7 Stevens 1002 -859
9 Morgan 968 -893
8 Gaines 993 -868
10 W Johnson 927 -934
Under the old system, FC would be about the only class that anything would still be up for grabs.
Fuller would already have clinched TF.
T-Ped would be within one round of Capps, Hight within 3 or 4 depending on qualifying, with Scelzi eliminated.
Anderson would only have to qualify 7th or higher to win the title in PS.
Under the new system, in TF, Fuller has to go a couple of rounds to lock it up no matter how everyone else does, but none of the 4 TF teams are mathematically eliminated yet. They will have quite an uphill battle to catch Hotrod though. If Fuller can secure the title next week he will have made something in the neighborhood of 700k in 2 weeks.
Under the new system in FC, the only way T. Pedregon can lose is if he DNQ's, and Scelzi or Hight were to win the race. Only Capps is eliminated as of now no matter what T-Ped does, short of him not entering. edit: Capps can still win the Championship, but he Tony would have to DNQ, and Capps would have to win the event and set a national record.
Under the new system in PS, Anderson, Coughlin, and Connolly all still mathematically have a shot. But Jeg and DC would need GA to go out early to have a realistic chance. AJ would need Anderson to DNQ, and then win it to take home the title.

Re: Updated Countdown vs Old Points
Well, you can say Capps is getting robbed, but with Tony being only 18 out of the old system, it would be a real close title race!!! Thanks Greg.
*Edit: This sounds like it's directed at you Greg! My bad, the people who have said Capps is getting robbed.

Re: Updated Countdown vs Old Points
They aren't trying to make it like NASCAR...
They are trying to make it as confusing as baseball!!!!
Jeez... too many numbers.. not enough nitro...

Re: Updated Countdown vs Old Points
Ironic - by trying to make the championship closer, they have turned a close finish in FC into a blowout - and in just one race!
Two races is way too short to determine a champion, one day like Sunday in Funny Car and the race winner is the champion.

Re: Updated Countdown vs Old Points
wow great thing we have the countdown . what a shame to have 2 funny cars going at it with less then a round between them. Thankfully its now basically wrapped up entering the Finals and the guy who has scored the most points on the track this year now has no chance to win the title

yeah cuz that happened so often.
As things have gotten tighter the last couple of seasons races have come down to the end before a champ is crowned
of course there is always the arguement that if someone clinched it early then they damn well deserve it, if you don't like it then beat them on the track.
I hope those countdown lovers have at least been entertained, it cost Capps the championship but hey if they've been enetertained thats all that counts right.

Re: Updated Countdown vs Old Points
I am in with PJ, being against the countdown farce. If NHRA wants to have their own deal like this, I would propose resetting the top 10 in points at Indy, and the last 6 races, anyone in the top 10 is in the hunt.
I have been waiting years for Capps to finally carry the 1 on his car, and this year he's been screwed, as have his fans.

i agree with that plan alan. but i would like indy to be the last race before they reset the points. kind of makes indy more important that way

I guess you could go either way, Indy starts the Countdown, or the last race to make it in.

Re: Updated Countdown vs Old Points
I like it, Pomona should be interesting to see how it pans out with the points races in 3 of the 4 categories. Who could have predicted what happened in FC to occur. The Countdown kept me glued to the TV last night.

thats the difference, under the old system the guy with the most points would go into the final race in the lead, now he has the most points but has no chance of winning the championship going into the last race.

Re: Updated Countdown vs Old Points
The problem with comparing the old to the new points system is that some of the teams changed the way they ran the season. Several teams had said they went into test mode in mid season... Who knows what the outcome would have been if they ran all out all year.
