Stott scores runner-up in Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. (June 27, 2007) - While the Knoll-Gas Nitro Jam Drag Racing Season is young, every team knows that each and every round is important. The same is true for Quain Stott and his 1963 LeeBoy Corvette powered by Torco Race Fuels.

The final round appearance moved Stott up two spots to fifth in the season long defense of his World Championship crown. Stott now trails fourth place Ed Hoover by just three points and is just 72 points behind leader Scott Cannon, Jr. The runner-up marked the 22nd time Stott has made a final round appearance in his career, tieing Stott with Mike Janis for second among active and fourth among all Pro Modified drivers.

Stott would make the most of his run to the finals, knocking off Ed Hoover in round one and perennial rival Shannon Jenkins in round two. Stott's round two perforce [6.153ET]was second best of the round to Scott Cannon, Jr.[6.122ET] and would set up a head to head match-up in the semi-finals.

Stott would take a huge hole shot and need every bit of it to hold off Cannon's 6.154ET to Stott's 6.221ET. "I guess Scott had an electrical problem or something that caused his dash lights to go out," Stott said. Stott would go long on the pass when his parachute handle malfunctioned sending the Fulton Competition Engine powered Corvette into the sand traps.

"We hurt the front end a little," Stott said. "Mostly cosmetic, but there was sand everywhere. I can't thank my crew enough, plus guys like Danny Rowe, Jimmy Rector and Kelly "The Welder" [Campbell] and others were over there helping us. I'm not sure we could have done it without them."

The final round would prove to be somewhat costly for Stott. He would give back 15 points [for sand on the track] and damage the motor in his loss to nitrous powered Pat Stoken.

"Anytime you go in the sand it's nearly impossible to get it all out of there without getting it back to the shop and putting it up on the rack. As soon as I did the burnout I knew we were going to have a rough time. When my crew chef Brandon Howard came on the radio and told me to hold up for a minute while they tried to sweep away some of the sand that shook out of the car I thought about saving the points. But, our sponsors and fans come to see a race. We gave it our best shot."

Despite the sand, Stott would make a race of it for Stoken. "There's no doubt he had a strong car," Stott added. "But we were leaning on that motor pretty hard. We nipped a piston, banged the burst panel and threw the blower belt off, but we still made a race out of it. We're pretty happy with the weekend. Gene Fulton and Walley Stoupe have given me a great car to race with. LeeBoy Equipment and Evan at Torco Race Fuels have given us great backing and support to go out and make a run at a second championship. We're very proud of our sponsors and all they do for this sport."

Stott left Tulsa for Edmonton, Alberta Canada to defend his CARS RV & Marine & Motorsports Rocky Mountain Nationals in the fourth stop on the Knoll-Gas Nitro Jam.
