ASHLEY RACES TO RUNNER-UP FINISH FOR CHARITY

HOLT, Fla. -- Mike Ashley may be commonly known today for his exploits behind the wheel of a nitro-burning Funny Car, but at least once a year he ventures into his old stomping grounds of Pro Modified to race for charity. This weekend, Ashley drove his way to a runner-up finish at Emerald Coast Dragway’s 2nd annual Heads Up Nationals.
Ashley dropped a tough final round to local favorite Rodney Rosentiel on a cold (55-degree) track. The final round combatants made a show out of it as Rosentiel recorded a 4.26, 175 to stop Ashley’s valiant 4.38, 175.

Ashley concluded the season with a 7-1 win/loss ratio in Pro Modified. Earlier in the season, Ashley captured the NHRA AMS title in St. Louis, Mo.

In this instance, everyone that raced emerged as a winner. The proceeds were donated to the American Cancer Society. In fact, Ashley donated his entire earning for the weekend to the charity.

“I’ve said it plenty of times but racing Pro Modified is still lots of fun for me,” Ashley said. “There’s no pressure and you can relax a bit and still be on top of your game. I love racing this event at Emerald every year because it is fun and supports a great cause.

“I think at least everybody in this sport and beyond has been touched by cancer in some shape, form or fashion. To race in an event that supports finding a cure just adds more value to an already great time.”
