ASHLEY RIDES MOMENTUM OF CONSISTENCY INTO U.S. NATIONALS FINAL ELIMINATIONS
INDIANAPOLIS --Mike Ashley didn’t need the quickest and fastest NHRA POWERade Funny car on the grounds of O’Reilly Raceway Park to feel good about his chances of winning the 52nd NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. The Knoll Gas – Torco Race Fuels Funny Car driver was consistent and today that was the key to confidence.
Ashley strung together a series of elapsed times such as a 4.802, 4.737, 4.771 and a 4.809 during race day conditions to qualify in the ninth position.
“Consistency wins races and when you look at what we achieved in qualifying, we are very confident,” Ashley said. “You have to look at consistency in two ways. We haven’t had many mistakes and I’m happy about that considering the short amount of time we’ve had to work together. Then the car is running consistent. That is important.
“Brian Corradi is doing an excellent job and what excites me the most is that we have a competitive car. I’m excited about final eliminations in Indianapolis in Funny Car and for the first time, I know I have a car that can win this race.”
Ashley will line up against former world champion Tony Pedregon in the first round of eliminations.
Final Eliminations will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 4.
