Scott Kalitta qualifies No. 14
Scott Kalitta, driver of the special one-off edition, nitro-fueled Foose Design/Mac Tools Funny Car, qualified in the No. 14 (4.790 sec., 322.11 mph) slot for the flopper class. Both the elapsed time and the speed are new career marks for the wily nitro racing veteran.
Scott’s team debuted their new 2007 Toyota Solara body at the event, but a crack in the carbon fiber shell that was noticed after their final qualifying attempt will sideline the new skin until necessary repairs are made. The team will utilize a backup Chevrolet Monte Carlo-styled body when eliminations begin tomorrow. Scott will race the No. 3 (4.701 sec., 325.14 mph) qualifier Tommy Johnson Jr. In the opening stanza for the Funny Car class.
