Fox Hunt

Getting a little out of order here, let's take a pass on the '68 mfg meet for a couple of minutes and fast forward to the mid-seventies...

Fox Hunts... Put butts in the seats, but took away a Saturday at the Drags from Something I'd take a date to, into a place I wouldn't want to be unarmed... guess my take was it became 'the thing to do'... oh, yeah, there's cars there too. People didn't go for the race, it was just the Hot Lick, The Place to BE... kinda like a frat party with cars... It was also the reason I stopped going to the drags... except for a Divisional meet, or a major event.... It killed my enjoyment of the once a month 16 car nitro event...

Think that's why, in a lot of ways, I'm not happy with Our Passion trying to grow and reach what I call the unenlightened/unwashed masses... The last Stock Car Race I went to was at Riverside around '80... It was a combo Winston West and Indy Car Race... We were set up in 2 RV's on the inside of turn 6... kinda picture The Zoo without restraint.... I've never seen so many breasts and so much booze flow as I did that weekend... and that was during the racing... and you could say I lived a 'depraved' childhood...

This isn't about being anti-countdown... I think it's more about selling beer and wine at the track, being an excuse to party, and oh yeah, there's something happening out there on the track... I was surprised when I came home on leave, went out to OCIR, and they were selling beer... when I could remember when you couldn't even get in the pits without wearing white pants, and buying a Pit Pass... (think the white pants thing ended around 71)...

Kinda hope I'm making sense here... I think uncontrolled growth is a bad thing... afterall, someone once said, "There are two kinds of people at the track, those making the car go fast, and people in the way..."

Even now, people aren't paying attention to what's going on around them in the pits... I'd hate to think what would happen it combine beer, lack of space, and lack of understanding of the hazards involved... and no, I'm not saying close the pits... I'm saying control the pits, even if it means more event staff... and stop selling alcohol on the pit side of the track...
