Guess I got spoiled living in Garden Grove in the 60's and 70's... wasn't a weekend that there wasn't a Nitro show... be it Rails, AA/FA, Jr. Fuels, or Floppers...

And I became Addicted to Floppers...

69 sticks out to me, that was the first year Dad would drop me off at the track a 8AM and come pick me up around 11pm.... you could do that back in the 'Leave it to Beaver' days... there I was, a 14 years old, 6'1, and a 140 pounds (I've put on 10 pounds since) with 20 bucks in my pocket doing what I loved....

Ten cars still stand out, even after all these years... most were floppers... but, in no order.

Beebe and Mulligan... The cave was in Garden Grove... so Chops and John were "home town" boys... and that car sure did top end...

Mondello and Matsubaru.... Sush could flat out drive....

Adams and Enriques... One Bad A jr fueler, and I know I misspelled Don's name... 7.3's all day long...

The M/T Mustangs... okay... Danny O in the blue car, Pat in the Red car... and before the season was over... a pearl white car, a yellow car with Larry Fullerton drive, but Danny O drove it a the points meet in late September to qualify to go to The World Finals... I can still see that car sideways in the bleach box doing his burn out, because burn out were only allowed behind the line.

Larry and Roland and their 7.3 debut weekend with an unpainted car... That is one of two mini-chargers that got me hooked on floppers.

Big John Mazmanian and Rich, and the whole Army... heck, even his Trash Trucks looked sweet.... dang Rubin could paint... and the car ran like a Raped Ape...

Nelson and Pam Carter's SuperChief... and Nelson is a damn great bowler too...

Ed Lenarth... Holy Toledo... Yellow, Jeep, LOUD.

Russel James Liberman... Think the 69 rat motored, pre Revell days Nova is his defining car to me....

the last car on my list?

John Farkonas designed it... Engine off set to the right, a little farther back than anybody else by offset the driver to the left... even had a roof hatch over the pilot....

Some guy named Austin Coil tuned it... a tenth and a half quicker... and let's not talk about the runs at Edgewater Park... no times announced that evening... track didn't want to be thought to have 'Hot Clocks'....

And Pat drove it and put on One Hell of a Show... and ya know, his grand kid seems to have his act together today....

Where was I going with this? Heck, I don't know, think the train derailed again... well, there's left over cake... think I'll have some....

See what you started Teri???

Karl.....great stuff! Having grown up in Orange County myself it brings back a lot of memories. OCIR first Drag strip I ever went to. I do have a question; do you remember a guy that used to bracket race at OCIR in a blue Plymouth valiant wagon called prince valiant? I don't know why but that car always stuck in my mind as does "The Snail" a Chevy nova that had a six in it.
