Turning back the clock

Yesterday I attended the Funny Car Nationals at Knoll-Gas Motorsports Park at 131 Martin, Michigan. It was more like a trip back in time. They had front engine diggers, Nostalgia Funny Cars, Supercharged nutso Hot Rods from Heck, and a ton of good old fashioned drag racers. I took my three girls, ages 10, 8, and 6. That alone is an experience, but they have attended the IHRA Northern Nats and NHRA Route 66 Joliet races with me. They know the drill and the thrill. The one thing that I love about this track is the family bathrooms. Other than the occasional too many beer jerkoff trying to escape the long line for the men's room, it's a real blessing. I spent $41 bucks to get in, and a few bucks on food. No, I did not buy any T-shirts! Another great thing about our day is we got to spend it with friends. Big Zappy was in attendance, along with PJ and his daughter. I got to meet Mike Minick, and a few other online buddies. Overall, people are very friendly and willing to answer questions and even show you their cars. The girls had a blast chasing each other around, coloring, trying to share popcorn, and watching some great action. They loved the jets, the nitro fumes, and they got a thrill when sparks flew during an occasional wall bump. Huge burnouts, nitro fumes, and a variety of rides made it just the ticket to ensure that winter won't be so bad. It did feel like winter after the sun went down, sure glad I packed the kids winter coats. Hats and mittens were a must. They went 1/8 mile racing later on in the night, but they kept the show going. We got to the track about 2pm, and got home about midnight. After baths, they were out for the count, and I believe still smiling. I ended up taking about 250 or so photos....which is quite difficult when you have to have one eye looking at the camera, and the other eye on the kids. I truly believe that the photos tell the ultimate story of the race....so enjoy the show, we sure did!

Thanks Angelo, and I wish I could be in VA...but as a stay-at-home Dad I get Indy and Joliet only. I do get to bring the girls to RT 66, so expect three little monsters to stop by and say hi next year.
