I haven't lost my mind....it's backed up on disc.
We are Family
Yesterday we lost a member of the drag racing family. I say family because in all my dealings with people in this sport, I have been treated with such kindness and friendship. A few weeks ago I took my three girls to the Joliet race. We walked the pits and where ever we went, we were greeted with open arms and smiles. The feeling of family was there. All of us were united in the pursuit of speed, excitement, competition, and adventure. I don't ask for autographs myself, mostly deferring to a casual conversation and offers of good luck. With my girls, they wanted their shirts, hats, and books signed by just about anyone, even fellow Maters. They were not star-struck, but truly excited to meet their heroes. It put a smile on my face and a warm spot in my heart to share my passion with them.
Yesterday after the accident, they wanted to know what was going on. I explained the situation to them and we discussed it for most of the afternoon. They know why I have an Eric Medlen sticker on my minivan, and they related Scott's passing to that. I was surprised how they could even understand. At dinner we said and extra prayer, and today at church we prayed again. When we were about to leave, my daughter said something that floored me. She said now Scott can live out his dreams in heaven. It was a simple thing but so fitting. I wondered how my daughters would take the loss of Scott, and they have made me proud. Now I must deal with it...if I possibly can. God bless you Scott...enjoy your dreams.
